National Curriculum

Maths Programmes of Study KS1 & KS2

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Our Curriculum Overview

How we teach Maths at Phil & Jim

Maths Calculation Policy

At Phil & Jim, we believe that all children can master Maths. We know that the critical thinking and reasoning skills required for Maths will enable our children to develop life-long skills that will help them pursue future passions.

As a school, from EYFS to Year 6, we follow White Rose Maths. White Rose Maths is a Scheme of Learning that helps children progress through the National Curriculum in small steps and develop a deeper understanding of mathematics. White Rose Maths focuses on Maths Mastery. Our Maths Mastery curriculum helps children to develop their conceptual understanding of mathematics. Through the use of Concrete objects, Pictorial representations and Abstract thinking (CPA), our children have the opportunity to acquire, practice, apply and deepen their knowledge and skills.

The way we teach Maths may be different from the way you learnt Maths at school. White Rose uses the following concrete objects and pictorial representations:
